Bird Butt to Bird Butt

I woke this morning to this view from my dressing room window…

Brrr, it's cold outside…

I went to the kitchen where R.H. had sausages and fried potatoes
keeping warm in the oven.

He had already fed the birds once and was ready to again.

He said they were "bird butt to bird butt."

We ate R.H.'s good breakfast and looked out at the welcome sunshine,
R.H. using the zoom lens to capture our visitors...

The sun disappeared for a while but the birds stayed.

And other guests stayed at R.H.'s smorgasbord…

I'll stay too, but inside where it's cozy and warm.
I won't think today about the -3 degrees predicted for tomorrow night.

"I feel so completely content on a snowy day.
My home, my family, life itself, even me, all is perfect--
all is safe from harm.
Nothing has been.
Nothing will be.
Just the present,
bounded by the peace and the hush of the snow."
Agnes Sligh Turnbull

What I will think about is family,
praying for all of them everywhere to stay safe and stay warm
and be happy.

Nora may not be warm in this picture her daddy sent me yesterday,
but she is one happy little girl, isn't she?

Be safe everyone, stay warm and be happy.

    1. Tammy, isn't our little Precious Moment a happy girl! She even has fun in the ice. In fact this little girl enjoys helping her parents clean, garden, cook. She has more fun doing that than playing with toys.

She loves the birds too, and the chickens!

  3. What wonderful photos of the poor cold birds! The ice is lovely but so dangerous. I am glad you are staying warm and cozy. Love the picture of sweet little Nora and her happy smile.

  4. You have gold finches! I haven't seen any in awhile. My cardinal couple stays around. Some mourning doves and a loud blue jay.

    1. We do have gold finches, Brenda! They stay year round. We even had a phoebe this morning, pretty early for them to be showing up. I always think cardinals are my favorite bird, but then I would hate to do without the noisy blue jays too!

  5. It's easy to see Nora is a treasure of a child. That face says it all.

How nice that you feed the birds Dewena! They need it so much. We tried, but it attracts Bears unfortnately. You probably didn't see my post of a few months ago...we actually had a bear come come into our screened in porch!

    Stay warm and cozy!

    1. Oh my, Doreen, I would be so afraid of bears in my yard. My sister has walked out in her garage to find them. Scary.

You stay safe! Drive home carefully!

  6. Such delight to watch the birds (and squirrel) while munching on a delicious breakfast. Your little granddaughter is sweet - she looks ready for a day on the sledding hill.

  7. Dewena,
I am always amazed how birds and many animals can navigate so easily and effortlessly in the cold freezing Winter. Your photos and narrative make me think of James Herriot storytelling -All Creatures Great and Small...
Your sweet angel looks very happy in her Winter gear all ready for a sledding adventure!

  9. I am there! This is one 'traffic jam' I wouldn't mind being stuck in at all! Bird butt to bird butt, then, it is, critters 'giving a lift' to their fellow travellers, even though the latter are equipped with wings, as they all snack on that smorgasbord, beneath frozen berries on branches and icicles above; what atmosphere!

And speaking of travellers, that blonde, bubbly beauty is beaming with happiness, as she glides along the glacial landscape in her own neck of the woods! Ah, the excitement of such a childhood adventure!

Gorgeous photos from your window today, my dear Dewena, where coziness and comfort food keep the chill at bay, 'bounded by the peace and the hush of the snow', protecting you from those temps below zero!

    Stay warm!

    1. It is fascinating to watch the traffic jam, Poppy! One of our favorite things to do on a cold snowy days, which we had more of today. And you're having some cold windy days there too, probably won't get your long walk in today, will you? Have you ever seen such a happy face over being out in ice--not snow? Oh, to be a child again!

Lights just flickered here--oh no, electricity, please don't go out, not with -5 degrees predicted! We'll see.

      You stay warm too, Poppy!

  10. Enjoyed this peek through your window :) Parkas come out in Florida (I see them on my neighbors as they walk their dogs) when the temps get down to the 50s...it's all relative, isn't it?!

    1. Parkas, Becky? Really? But then I remember living there and building a fire inside when we had 60s.

It will soon be over for you andd the sun will come out with all its warmth. Love your bird pictures. TEll hubby he did a good job. We have a few woodpeckers and chickadees but birds are scarce this winter. I know your birds appreciate thta extra food during this cold time.

  15. Oh Dewena, what would that be like to look outside the window and see the red cardinal? I am fascinated with this bird, it's so beautiful. What a delightful picture of the mourning dove on the squirrel's back. Oh, how I love nature, and you have filled me with it today with your pictures. Thank you.

    1. Do you not have the red cardinals there, Sheri? I think they're my favorite. I don't think the dove is on the squirrel's back but right beside him but Nib's End (above) idea of the dove wearing squirrel slippers is just too cute!

  16. You get pretty much the same assortment of birds as I do (minus the starlings mentioned in the above post). At first, I thought that dove was sitting on the squirrel's back! Great photo, and Nora is a sweetie!

    1. I loved the squirrel/dove picture too! And at first it looked like the thing stretched out in the snow behind them was the skin of some kind of animal but it is actually the roots of a big sugar maple that give us a green umbrella off the kitchen.

Thank you, Amy, Nora is a sweetie!
