Elliston Place Soda Shop

I've always loved an old-fashioned soda shop.

It was where all the crowd found out
you were going steady,
where you wore his letter-jacket,
first heard what would become "our song"
on the jukebox.

Nashville still has a gem of a soda shop,
Elliston Place Soda Shop,
in existence since 1939 in the same location.

It's still where a guy takes his date for a milkshake.

Especially on cold winter days when she really
needs to get out of the house.

And especially when she hasn't had anything
sweet to eat in six weeks.

How were those chocolate milkshakes?

As a preacher friend used to say:

"Good enough to make you want to
smack your momma."

She did resist the slice of pie he took home--
coconut cream pie like his momma used to make.

And what was their song?

"Put your head on my shoulder...
maybe we will fall in love."

  1. This soda shop is adorable, but most of all, so are both of you too. It's so wonderful that you can still go there like yesterday. They have one old soda shop that I know of in our city, and it really is a step back in time. I love to see this preserved. Have a wonderful weekend. xoox Su

  2. Some of my fondest memories growing up were set in our town's soda fountain. My friend Sherry's parents owned the "drugstore" and soda fountain. They lived in an apartment above the store. Can you imagine how much fun it was to have a sleepover at Sherry's? We spent a lot of time in the booth by the comic books. My favorite was the Archie comic series. We could also fix ourselves whatever treats from the soda fountain that we desired. Heaven!

The soda fountain is gone now, and so are Sherry's dear parents. I have lost touch with Sherry even though she still lives in the area where we grew up. I really need to give her a call and arrange a reunion.

Thanks for reviving those memories for me. It looks as if you and your husband had a fine date. That burger and fries caught my eye and made me drool a little!

  6. I really miss our soda fountains. We had alot when I was growing up in the 60s, but than the city took most of them down to build malls. I hate malls. The other two just closed down and they put other types of stores in them.

  10. What a lovely day and the two of you look happy and content. There's an old fashioned...or there was, must check...drug store in Bluefield, VA. They serve fountain beverages and sandwiches. Next time I go that way I'll make time to visit; thanks for the nudge, Dewena.
BTW, Morton's Buildings will be at some farm show in Nashville. I've been looking at them as a possible house when I move. I'm tempted to say if I move but don't want to give God any ideas. LOL They'll be closer to me in eastern TN, I think but can't remember and their website is not cooperating. No, I haven't sold the farm but hope springs eternal.

  11. I can't get past the "she hasn't had anything sweet to eat in six weeks" part of this post. If that had been me I would have belly flopped into that shake and only come up for air.

You are becoming quite the adept at photoshop. Do you get help or do you figure it out on your own?

The photos of you and your date are really quite sweet.

  12. When I was young my uncle had his own drugstore in a little town in PA / and it had the soda area! :) A long counter with the stools. This brought back memories. While during 3 months of the year we visited them on the weekends, and of course the store was closed on Sunday, in the summer I'd spend a week or two with them and get paid 10.00 for dusting in the drugstore :)

  19. Oooh, I would love this place! I can't think of anything like it near me! You and your "date" look very happy with your burgers and shakes...and each other!

  20. Oh, what a delightful soda shop, Dewena. How cute you look here waiting patiently for your meal. You know, the soda shops are called "diners" here, and we have a place called "Mel's Diner" that we go to sometimes. But how nice that yours goes back so far since 1939. That burger sure does look yummy. To this day, I still love the diners that we had when we spent time on our dates at 16 years old. :)

    love, ~Sheri

We do not have a fun place like this close to us. I wish we did. I love a good old milkshake.

  24. Awww, this was such a sweet (no pun intended) post, Dewena. I love the smile on hubby's face with the burger in his hand. Priceless! We had a soda shop in the town where I grew up. Everyone headed there after school for chocolate cokes and fries. My mother didn't like the idea of me "hanging out", so I was allowed only one visit per week, Wednesday after school. And if my boyfriend (future husband) gave me a kiss over a coke my mother knew about it before I got home! Small town soda shops. . .gotta love 'em. Hugs, Nancy

  25. You and RH are so sweet :)

Your post made me wish I could have lived then. How much more wonderful to have lived when there were still soda shops and Paul Anka on the jukebox. Much better than the crap we listen to now.

    hugs to you,
    rue

  26. No sweets in six weeks?!! Well, you certainly chose the right place to break THAT 'fast'!

You and your date look so very happy - the perfect pair, sitting so comfortably in each other's company, sharing that scrumptious comfort food, sipping on those cool, silky smooth shakes! Strawberry for me, please!

Dewena, would you believe that just this past weekend, Liberty and I had the most delicious burger and fries (and apple pie a la mode!) at Wimpy's Diner? It's very similar to your Elliston Place Soda Shop. It was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had! Ah, that wavelength of ours...we're just behind you, my friend!

When I was a little girl, my grandma used to take us to Woolworth's for the same meal. There was a long counter with red, swivel stools, which made the time pass more quickly for us kids, while we impatiently waited for our food. She'd only order coffee for herself, while we kids cleaned off our plates! To this day, every time I pass a greasy spoon diner, I think of her, quietly sipping on her coffee, getting so much enjoyment from watching her grands gobble up their fare!

So glad you got a chance to get out with your beau.

    SWEET hugs,
    Poppy

  27. This was the most delightful post - I even showed it to my husband! You and your hubby look so happy in these photos. We don't have a soda fountain place anywhere near our house that I know of. I haven't had a milkshake in ages...and I've been doing so well with my no sugar eating, too (except for Christmas). So maybe it's a good thing we don't have a soda fountain around here. ;-) Your shake did indeed look delicious though!

  28. If I ever get to Nashville I'll have to look up Elliston's for sure. We have a place in Sault Ste. Marie called Ernie's. It's not as nice or as large as Elliston's but it has the best coconut cream pie I've ever tasted!
So good you got out and I bet the milkshake was delicious.

  30. Those photos were great!
When I was growing up we never, ever lived anywhere that had a soda fountain. I read about them, but never went into one until I was an adult. Oh how I longed to climb up onto a stool and order a milkshake or a cherry coke - you see, I knew all about them!

  31. Dewena,
Such a sweet, fun post! So nice to see you and your "date" in these photos! Now I want a milkshake! That burger doesn't look too shabby either! YUM!

  32. Dewena,
This was a fun, fun post and ya'll look absolutely wonderful.
Wow, I am impressed that you have gone that long without a sweet of any kind-I would perish!
    I love soda fountains too.
When I was a girl growing up, at least once a month Momma and I would make a date and go to Johnsons and Johnsons soda fountain for a chocolate malt!
