"No use, men, you'll never understand."

[Woman's Home Companion, October 1943]

"No use, men, you'll never understand.

To you it's just a lot of waves and curls...

But to Betty it's all that a brand new permanent can mean to a woman.

Something to fortify the spirit...to do the soul good."

The above "public service" announcement, sponsored by the Brewing
Industry Foundation, appeared nearly two years into World War II,
when keeping the morale up was important.

They sure got it right, didn't they, ladies?
A visit to the hair salon is great for a woman's spirit, isn't it?

Here's the young woman who for almost two years now has gotten me over
the trauma of years of bad haircuts.

Meet Stevie, a hair professional who listens and cares and advises
and treats me as if I were a country music star.

We also have so much fun talking and laughing that I leave there
feeling as if I've been to a great therapist.

Thank you, Stevie, it's not "just a lot of curls and waves,"
it really does do my soul good!

And men, I don't know if you truly understand that,
but I think R.H. does get it that a hair appointment with Stevie
sure perks up his wife.

A young man at the front desk of the salon was nice enough
to take the above picture,
but here's the side and back view that R.H. took when I got home.
Don't ask me why I wasn't smiling;
I really was very happy inside!

Who out there has a Stevie in your life?
Or are you talented enough to do your own, like my friend Tammy?
Or do you dread those hair appointments like I used to?

Is this a frivolous blog post, dear friends?

If it wasn't frivolous to the Brewing Industry Foundation in 1943 wartime,
maybe we should consider a haircut as necessary as a trip to the doctor or dentist--

and a lot more fun!

  3. This is a crazy coincidence! I went to my hairstylist on Tuesday. I had warned her at the last appointment that I was ready for a change. She came through with a shorter and much perkier look for my hair. I love it! Yes, a trip to the hair salon is a great boost to the mood. Love your hair, and the happiness shines through in the first photo. Beautiful!

  5. I need a hairdresser of my own. LOL. I used to just get a perm and I could care for my own hair. Now that I am older and wearing it shorter, it is not so easy. Your hair looks so soft and nice. What are we suppose to blog about but our lives, likes, and anything happening around us. It's our world...we can blog what we like. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  10. I WISH I had a stevie! I recently went back to my old stylist in ny to get my hair colored. I like the way the person cuts my hair in massachusetts but I'm not crazy about the color. I figured if I'm going to be in a strange land for the next 3 months I want it to last as long as possible.

You look lovely dewena! No wonder you love her. Now tell Mr. Hunka burnin' luv he needs to take you out for a night on the town.

    1. You don't need a Stevie, Doreen, you're living the life of Riley on the beaches while we go through cold hat hair weather here! I'll pass your message on to R.H. but he's been nursing a rotator cuff injury and doing PT. Our night on the town will have to be postponed, but I like that idea!

You would think that since it is short, it would be easy, but it isn't! Email me her info please ma'am! LOVE it!! Hugs and love to you!!

What a fresh and chic way to start the new year!

    Ciao bella!

  17. I can see why you adore Stevie, she gave you a great cut! I love your style, Dewena.

My 'Stevie' is Dawn. I used to only have her cut my hair and I would color it myself -- until I finally had her straighten out the mess I made and she worked magic. We always have a good chat when I see her and we end my appointment with a hug and feeling so uplifted.

  18. You look Maaaahvuous dear! The cut is flattering, the color gorgeous. Stevie sounds like a hair whiz and confidante. I need to have a conversation with my hair girl, I would go out of my mind during the long process otherwise.

I love posts like these, Dewena, it's fun to know how all of us think, how we do things. A great conversation starter as if we were all out together for lunch! Thank you!!

  21. I know exactly what you mean about a good relationship with your hairdresser! I've been seeing the same young woman for at least 10 years now and even though she's 20 years younger than me, we chat like there is no age gap between us at all. I think most hairdressers are indeed like therapists...my hairdresser told me that I wouldn't believe all the stuff she's heard! ;-)
I think next time I need a haircut though, I'm going to a new person. She actually cut my hair last summer and I really liked it. She's in a new place now, but I think I'll go back to her. I'm not really happy with my hair the way it is now.
Your hair style is very flattering on you and I love your white hair! You are one of the lucky ones who has that beautiful white hair instead of gray. :-)

  22. Dewena, your hair really does look great! And I have the very opposite as you, naturally curly hair! Not a lot to do with that, but I do straighten it at times for special occasions. Curly haired women would love straight hair sometimes, like yours, and straight haired women would love curly hair sometimes. Go figure. Stevie sounds like a fun gal to talk to, not just about hair but about life.

You look great, Dewena. It's such a stylish hairdo.

    love, ~Sheri

  24. First things first, Dewena, you look beautiful! I have a male Stevie, named Carlos. Aside from a great hair stylist, he is also a "therapist," listening and advising on any topic I bring up. Fun post!

  26. Girl Talk is so therapeutic, don't you think? With so many troublesome things to weight us in the world, it is nice to come here and have a good chin-wag about hair.

I took a photo of Helen Mirren to my hairdresser a few months ago and said: "If you can make me look like her, I'll double your tip." She got the hair right.

In fact, I am finding myself driving over an hour back to my hairstylist just because she is so fabulous and we always have the very best of visits.
Looks to me like you are going to have a wonderful 2016.
    Happy New Year!

  30. You look so pretty. I love how she styled your hair and that's a great picture of the two of you. I agree that men will just never understand what those trips to the beauty salon really mean for us, especially when you have a 'Stevie' there to lift your spirits. My beautician is Sadie and she is a very warm person with the biggest heart. She always makes me feel better, too...

  31. Lovely. I like the profile shot. Very elegant. I can't wait to get the very last bit of blonde out of my hair so I can grow my silver a little longer. Love your white hair. And I think the lipstick looks beautiful, too.
