"No Time Like the Pleasant"

Once again I've been inattentive to my dear old Window, something that always seems to happen in the summer.

While I had stacks of posts meant for June, July, and August, it's always difficult to know what to post when I do return.

And so this time, at the end of the summer months, here's a Kitchen Window picture that exemplifies sunshine at this favorite place in my home.

My large kitchen window is the view I try to picture when the 2 a.m. gremlins do their best to keep me awake after a bathroom trip.

I know this window will be there waiting to welcome me when I get up in the morning to let BreeBree and James Mason out to go potty, where I stand drinking a glass of water while they're outside in the garden.

It will mark another day made exceptional by the sheer grace of being alive.

Take that, you nasty 2 a.m. gremlins!

I'll leave you with wishes that your summer has been full of pleasant days and with this quotation I love that I found in one of my vintage magazines:

There is no time like the pleasant.

I found this delightful sentence by Oliver Herbert in Ladies' Home Journal of August 1952.

Mr. Herbert, a true gentleman author of the early 1900's, a gift from England to America, was known for his pithy bons mots, and Amen to this one.

Being completely absent to that talent I very much admire those who possess the talents of brain and tongue issuing a bon mot. After learning about Mr. Herbert's books that he both wrote and illustrated, I would like to become more acquainted with him.

My very best to my family and friends who visit here, all of whom are the pleasantest!

There truly is "no time like the pleasant," right?

  1. There is nothing like sunshine coming through a kitchen window, though I'm sure that's not what's on your mind in the middle of the night! So far, I am fortunate that I am able to go right back to sleep after my middle of the night bathroom trip. I love that saying, "there is no time like the pleasant." I think I will borrow that for my art journal!

  2. I do LOVE your post, Dewena.

Those 2 am gremlins do get about, don't they! :(
Thank goodness you have such gorgeous photos to help focus your thoughts - those lilies truly are a breath of summer sunshine.

And I do adore that line you mention "There is no time like the pleasant." It is a keeper!

Wishing you a beautiful September. Thanks so much for a lovely visit. Brenda xo

    1. Thank you, Brenda! I watched a YouTube video of two sleep specialists and they said 2 a.m. is when we're most awake and 8 a.m. is when we're most sleepy. Certainly true enough for me now but they didn't talk about the gremlins visiting then so I was glad to discover that thinking about my kitchen window being ready to greet me does help. A beautiful September to you too!

  3. Dewena, your beautiful, lemon hued lilies, I'm certain, keep your kitchen bright and cheerful all through the night, so why wait till daylight to enjoy them? After all, 'there's no time like the pleasant', right? So, on your future a.m. bathroom trips, make a pit stop at your window to refuel with some pretty eye candy. Your peepers will be pleased and you'll be off to dreamland, pronto!

    Happy travels! ;))

    1. Ah Poppy, but then the big kitchen window would be filled with the dark of night flooding in and even a lemony bouquet could not get that out of my mind, I'm afraid. Your advice is inspired but timid me will most likely continue to hurry back to my bedroom where my curtains of blue hydrangeas on a pink background keep out the darkness. I do admire how your mind explores possibilities though, my friend!

  4. Your kitchen window is so bright and large and filled with pretty things. I miss my 'old kitchen' window at the first house we owned. I could fill the sill with plants and all kinds of pretty dishes.

Those nasty gremlins pester me early in the night, takes me forever to fall asleep some nights. It's an awful feeling when sleep is so elusive, isn't it?

So nice to see you back, Dewena! I'm glad you had a nice summer.

    1. It is an awful feeling, Karen! So difficult to get the mind to be ready for sleep even when the body is ready. I never can decide whether it's better to just lie there and relax anyway or get up and do something. Enjoy September there in your beautiful state!

  5. Dewena, I love this saying. How wonderful that you came across it in one of your old magazines. Your yellow flowers sitting next to your kitchen window are beautiful.

Thank you for stopping by and meeting baby Charlotte. I appreciate that very much.

  6. Such beautiful lemon-coloured lilies, Dewena. A lovely space in your home to hold in your mind when those nasty gremlins visit. I love the saying and may borrow it.
